One of the central topics was the growing economic pressure on specialized media outlets, which has led to reduced newsroom sizes and the need to diversify sources of income. Participants agreed that editorial independence is compromised when funding depends excessively on stakeholders within the tourism sector itself. In this regard, the importance of strengthening sustainable models that preserve credibility and journalistic rigor was emphasized.
The impact of digitalization on the profession was also discussed. The demand for immediacy and competition with content creators on social media have transformed traditional journalistic dynamics. However, the speakers stressed that specialization, in-depth analysis and fact-checking remain distinguishing values that must be preserved. Continuous training and technological adaptation were highlighted as key tools to address these changes.
Another significant aspect of the discussion was the need to build international networks of collaboration among tourism journalists. It was suggested that the globalization of tourism requires an equally global perspective from the media, capable of contextualizing trends and sharing best practices. Within this framework, a proposal emerged to organize an international meeting or summit bringing together specialized journalists and representatives of media outlets from different countries.
The initiative was enthusiastically received by the attendees, who agreed that such an event would help consolidate partnerships, exchange knowledge and highlight the role of tourism journalism in the sustainable development of the sector. In addition, it was noted that this type of gathering could contribute to establishing common ethical standards and strengthening the defense of press freedom in contexts where it still faces restrictions.
Regarding the possible venue for this future summit, Mexico and Brazil were proposed as the main options. Both countries were recognized for their relevance in the international tourism landscape, their cultural diversity and their capacity to host a global-scale event. The final decision will be subject to further deliberations, although the importance of securing support from local institutions and sector organizations was underlined.
The webinar concluded with a collective commitment to defending a free, independent and specialized press. Participants agreed that tourism journalism not only informs about destinations but also plays a fundamental role in promoting responsible practices and in building a more transparent and equitable industry.
In this way, the commemoration of World Press Freedom Day became an opportunity to reaffirm essential journalistic values and to project new initiatives for international cooperation. TSTT announced its intention to continue this dialogue and move forward with the organization of the proposed summit, thereby consolidating a permanent space for exchange among professionals in the sector.
