Burj Al Arab reinvents itself after decades

The iconic Burj Al Arab hotel, long regarded as a global symbol of luxury and contemporary architecture, has temporarily closed its doors to undertake an ambitious, comprehensive restoration. This decision marks a turning point in the history of the landmark property, which after more than a quarter century of operation aims to adapt to the evolving demands of high-end tourism while preserving its original essence.

Opened in 1999, the sail-shaped building not only redefined the concept of luxury hospitality but also became one of the most recognizable visual icons of Dubai and the world. Now, after decades leading the most exclusive segment of the hotel industry, the complex is undergoing its first major structural transformation, a process expected to last approximately 18 months.

The renovation will be led by renowned French interior architect Tristan Auer, a prominent figure in contemporary luxury design. His task is particularly delicate: to modernize the spaces without altering the distinctive character that has made the hotel an international reference point. The project includes a deep upgrade of suites, common areas, and services, with special emphasis on craftsmanship, exclusive materials, and advanced technological integration.
