Living tradition and constant work
None of this would be possible without the discreet and sustained work carried out throughout the year. The Coordinating Board of the Brotherhoods of Holy Week in Ibiza plays an essential role in preserving and promoting this celebration. Its work is not limited to organizing events; it also encompasses heritage conservation, institutional coordination, and a clear commitment to communicating that Ibiza’s Holy Week is a fundamental part of the island’s cultural identity.
This collective effort has allowed Ibiza’s Holy Week to maintain its authenticity, while at the same time opening itself to the outside as a solid cultural proposal—respectful and consistent with the character of the territory.
The beginning of a shared journey
This year, Holy Week in Ibiza will begin on 6 March with the diocesan proclamation, an event that will officially mark the start of the most significant days and will be accompanied by the presentation of the city’s Holy Week poster—an image that each year symbolizes the spirit and identity of this celebration.
From that moment on, the city embarks on a journey that culminates in the most solemn days, especially Good Friday, when all the island’s most venerated images process together in an atmosphere of absolute reverence. The Procession of the Holy Burial is one of the most overwhelming moments of Ibiza’s Holy Week, capable of stopping time and bringing the city together in a silence that says everything.
Culture, heritage, and destination
An increasing number of people are discovering that Ibiza can also be experienced through calm and depth. Holy Week thus presents itself as an opportunity to get to know the island from a different perspective—away from the superficial and closely linked to heritage, spirituality, and collective memory.
In this line of cultural projection, Ibiza’s Holy Week is supported by the Island Council of Ibiza through an advertising sponsorship agreement with the Ibiza Travel brand, a collaboration that reinforces the commitment to cultural, sustainable tourism that respects the territory’s true identity.
What is Ibiza’s Holy Week really?
For the president of the Coordinating Board of the Brotherhoods of Holy Week in Ibiza, Nieves Jiménez, Holy Week is lived from within, as a time that invites us to pause and to look more deeply:
“Holy Week in Ibiza is, above all, a time of encounter with God and with ourselves. It is a journey of faith lived in community, through silence, prayer, and the memory of those who came before us. In a world that moves too fast and sometimes distances us from what is essential, these days invite us to stop, to contemplate the Cross, to accompany one another, and to walk together toward the hope of the Resurrection.”
Why you should experience Ibiza’s Holy Week at least once
In Ibiza, Holy Week is not merely observed: it is felt.
There are no crowds or artifices—only shared silence and sincere emotion.
The processions do not move along wide avenues, but through streets that have been telling the same story for centuries.
To experience Ibiza’s Holy Week is to walk slowly between walls, to listen to the echo of footsteps on stone, to see how light draws shadows in the night, and to understand that here tradition is not performed: it is inherited.
It is to witness unique moments, such as the passage of the Most Holy Christ of the Cemetery accompanied by the Passos, an ancestral chant in the Ibizan language, passed down from generation to generation, which intones the Stations of the Way of the Cross and forms an essential part of the island’s spiritual and cultural heritage. A moment in which the entire city accompanies, in reverent silence, one of the most intimate and moving rituals of its calendar. An instant that needs no explanation, because it speaks directly to the heart.
Ibiza’s Holy Week is faith, but it is also culture, heritage, and truth. It is the Ibiza that is not always on display—the one that remains when everything stops.
And perhaps that is why, whoever experiences it once… always returns.
About the Ibiza Board of Brotherhoods
The Ibiza Board of Brotherhoods is made up of the seven penitential brotherhoods of the city of Ibiza, some of them among the oldest and most representative on the island. Deeply rooted in the city’s Christian life, these brotherhoods play a fundamental role not only during Holy Week, but throughout the year—keeping faith alive, promoting popular devotion, and preserving a valuable material and intangible heritage.
