Almada (Portugal): Religious tourism as a space for encounter and peace

11-02-2026

From February 13 to 14, 2026, the Santuário de Cristo Rei in Almada (Portugal) will host the 6th National Conference of the Tourism Pastoral, a gathering that will bring together experts, Church leaders, tourism professionals, and community representatives to explore in greater depth the social, cultural, and spiritual dimensions of faith-based tourism.

The World Religious Tourism Network will take part in the event to share experiences and best practices developed in the countries and cities that make up the network, highlighting models of management, hospitality, and cooperation that strengthen the link between tourism and the community.

Organised by the Tourism Pastoral Ministry of Portugal, the conference aims to explore the role of religious tourism as a driver of intercultural dialogue and social friendship, highlighting its capacity to foster understanding between peoples, solidarity and respectful coexistence among different faith traditions.

The programme is structured around several thematic panels, ranging from the identity of religious tourism to future perspectives. The opening keynote will be delivered by João Filipe Marques, with the lecture “The sociology of tourism as a sociology of happiness: an exploratory journey”, setting out a reflective framework on how spiritually motivated travel experiences can profoundly impact both visitors and host communities.
