United States makes its Visa Bond program permanent

21-08-2026

The United States has made its Visa Bond Program permanent, a measure that allows authorities to require financial deposits from certain applicants for B-1 and B-2 visas for temporary business or tourism travel. The decision consolidates a mechanism that began as a pilot program and will now become a permanent component of U.S. immigration policy, with the aim of reducing visa overstays and strengthening compliance with the conditions governing entry into the country.

Under the regulations, consular officers may require a bond before issuing a visa to nationals of countries covered by the program. Countries may be selected based on factors such as high overstay rates, shortcomings in information sharing, difficulties related to identity verification and criminal records, as well as weaknesses in document security, screening procedures, or citizenship-by-investment programs.
