Supermarkets attract travelers as a new tourism experience

Visiting monuments, exploring museums, or photographing iconic landmarks continues to be an essential part of travel, but a far more ordinary activity is gaining popularity among those seeking to experience destinations from a different perspective. Visiting a supermarket while on holiday has become a tourism experience in its own right for many travelers who are curious to discover what local residents buy, which products form part of their everyday diet, and what consumer habits characterize each country.

This trend, often referred to as “supermarket tourism,” reflects a broader transformation in the way people travel. According to a Hilton report based on interviews with 14,000 travelers from 14 countries, 77% say they enjoy visiting supermarkets when traveling abroad. What might initially seem like a simple shopping trip therefore takes on a cultural and experiential dimension, particularly for travelers seeking to connect with everyday life beyond traditional tourist routes.
