Europe postpones ETIAS travel authorization system once again

17-08-2026

The launch of the European Travel Information and Authorisation System, commonly known as ETIAS, has been postponed once again and remains without a definitive implementation date. The new mechanism, designed to pre-authorize travelers from visa-exempt countries, is expected to become one of the most significant changes to European border controls. However, challenges associated with the digitalization of border procedures have forced authorities to revise the timetable once more.

ETIAS will primarily affect citizens of countries whose nationals can currently make short stays in much of Europe without applying for a conventional visa. These include travelers from the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada and Australia. Once the system eventually becomes operational, these visitors will be required to obtain an electronic travel authorization before departing for European countries participating in the program.
