Those missing include residents of the affected villages, members of the security forces, employees working on hydroelectric projects and numerous foreign visitors. The region had been receiving tourists and pilgrims travelling to sacred sites, including Mount Kailash. Authorities are now attempting to verify passenger lists and nationalities amid severely disrupted communications.
In Nepal’s Rasuwa District, one of the worst-affected areas, the flood destroyed essential sections of the road network and left several communities isolated. Footage from the region shows buildings being engulfed by a dark mass of debris and people running only seconds before the torrent arrived. Bridges, hydroelectric power stations and supply lines were also damaged. The force of the flood caused water levels in several rivers to rise rapidly and carried enormous boulders, trees and wreckage downstream, turning the waterways into deadly corridors.
Military helicopters, police officers, soldiers, healthcare workers and volunteers are taking part in the search operations. However, the rugged terrain, severed access routes, unstable ground and threat of further flooding are making it difficult to reach the most remote locations. Rescue teams are focusing their efforts on finding survivors, evacuating injured people and distributing food, drinking water, blankets and medical supplies. Nepal has requested international assistance, while China has also deployed personnel and resources on the Tibetan side of the border.
Authorities have urged residents to remain away from riverbanks and comply with evacuation orders. There are concerns that accumulations of mud, ice and rock may have created blockages whose sudden collapse could trigger additional surges. Monitoring has been intensified along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers, as well as other waterways connected to the regional river system. In nearby communities, families are anxiously awaiting news of their loved ones while temporary shelters accommodate those whose homes have been destroyed.
Experts say that further investigation will be required to establish the precise sequence of events. Initial observations point to the collapse of part of a glacier, which fell from a considerable height and triggered an avalanche of ice and rock. Rising temperatures and accelerated melting may have weakened the ice mass, although every contributing factor will need to be examined. Nepal has lost a substantial proportion of its glacial coverage in recent decades, a transformation that is increasing the exposure of its valleys to sudden floods and landslides.
The Himalayan mountain range is especially vulnerable to global warming. Retreating glaciers encourage the formation of unstable lakes and alter slopes that were previously held together by permanently frozen ground. When a natural barrier gives way or a mass of glacial ice collapses, millions of cubic metres of water and sediment can descend within minutes. The region’s steep geography magnifies the torrent’s speed and drastically reduces the time available to issue warnings and evacuate threatened communities.
The death toll may continue to rise as search operations proceed. The immediate priority remains rescuing those who are still isolated, identifying the victims and assisting the thousands of people affected. A long recovery will follow in a region where roads, homes and livelihoods have disappeared beneath the mud. The great flood has left a deep scar across the Himalayas and delivered an unmistakable warning about the growing fragility of these mountains.
