Portugal boosts inland tourism with strategic regional investment

26-04-2026

Portugal has taken a decisive step in its tourism development strategy with an €11 million investment aimed at strengthening tourism in the country’s inland regions. This initiative seeks to rebalance the national tourism model, traditionally concentrated in coastal areas and major cities, by unlocking new opportunities in territories with lower visitor density but significant cultural, natural, and heritage value.

The program supports a dozen projects distributed across various regions, particularly in rural areas of the north, center, and Alentejo. In these territories, tourism represents a key opportunity to stimulate local economies and counteract depopulation. The initiatives range from the development of rural accommodations to the creation of hiking and cycling routes, as well as the enhancement of cultural assets and local traditions.
