AirPods boost tourism with instant translation

Apple has just introduced a breakthrough that promises to change the dynamics of conversations between people who speak different languages: the Live Translation feature for the new AirPods Pro 3, which will also roll out to certain earlier compatible models. This innovation leverages Apple Intelligence to translate in real time what someone says to the user—and vice versa—making cross-language exchanges seamless without having to pause and pull out a phone.

The feature already supports English, French, German, Brazilian Portuguese, and Spanish, and Apple has announced plans to add Italian, Japanese, Korean, and Simplified Chinese in the coming months. To use it, listeners will need AirPods equipped with Active Noise Cancellation (ANC)—such as the new AirPods Pro 3, AirPods Pro 2, or AirPods 4 with ANC—an iPhone running iOS 26 or later, and Apple Intelligence enabled.

When both participants wear AirPods that support Live Translation, each can hear what the other says translated directly into their chosen language through their earbuds. If one person does not have AirPods, the iPhone app will display a translated transcript so that they can follow along on screen. The noise-cancellation feature plays an important role by lowering background sounds, ensuring that the translated voice comes through clearly—especially valuable in busy or noisy environments.
