Saint Teresa of Jesus in Alba de Tormes: Historic veneration of her body after more than a century

22-05-25

From May 11 to 25, the town of Alba de Tormes (Salamanca) becomes the spiritual epicenter for thousands of faithful and visitors who come to venerate the incorrupt body of Saint Teresa of Jesus, in a historic event that hasn’t taken place in over a century. This initiative is part of the activities of the “Huellas de Teresa” (Footprints of Teresa) network, which brings together the towns where the Saint personally founded convents of the reformed Carmelite order, highlighting the mystical, literary, and human legacy of one of Christianity’s most universal figures.

Saint Teresa died in Alba de Tormes in 1582, making it one of the most significant places in her life and work. She maintained close ties with the Dukes of Alba, especially with Doña María Álvarez de Toledo and her husband Don Fernando Álvarez de Toledo, the third Duke of Alba, who actively supported her founding work. Her remains have rested there for centuries, although public veneration of her body has been allowed only on rare occasions. This marks just the fourth time in history that such grace has been granted, prompting an unprecedented spiritual, institutional, and touristic mobilization in the ducal town.
