Europe protests against mass Tourism

On June 15, several cities across southern Europe will host an unprecedented day of protests against mass tourism. Community and neighborhood organizations from Spain, Italy, and Portugal, unified through the SET Network (Southern Europe Network Against Touristification), have announced simultaneous demonstrations in iconic tourist destinations such as Barcelona, Venice, Lisbon, Palermo, and the Canary Islands. Their primary goal is to highlight the negative impacts of uncontrolled tourism growth on local communities, demanding a shift toward a more sustainable and equitable model.

Planned actions include marches through tourist-heavy areas, airport pickets, disruptions of tourist buses, and symbolic occupations of landmark sites. These protests aim to draw attention to critical issues such as the housing crisis, the strain on public services, pollution, and environmental degradation—problems activists attribute directly to mass tourism.

In cities like Barcelona, activist platforms such as "Menys Turisme, Més Vida" ("Less Tourism, More Life") have confirmed their participation, emphasizing the urgent need to control tourist expansion and protect residents’ quality of life. Similarly, in the Balearic Islands, groups like "Canviem el Rumb de les Pitiüses" ("Change the Course of the Pitiüses") will join the demonstrations, denouncing how current tourism practices increase social inequality and disproportionately impact vulnerable communities.
