Africa: Awakening tourism

10-04-25

Africa, a continent of extraordinary natural beauty, cultural diversity and historical richness, faces a unique opportunity to transform its tourism industry. Despite boasting some of the world's most iconic destinations, its share of the global tourism market remains limited, accounting for only 4.3% of international arrivals in 2021, according to the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). This situation contrasts with its vast potential and underlines the urgent need to implement strategies to boost its growth in this sector.

Africa is home to breathtaking landscapes, from the dunes of the Sahara to the jungles of the Congo, from pristine beaches to majestic mountains. It also has an unrivalled cultural richness, with more than 2,000 languages and a history dating back to the oldest civilisations. However, many of these treasures remain unknown to international tourism due to a lack of adequate promotion and development.

The continent faces several obstacles that limit its tourism growth. Poor infrastructure, such as poorly maintained roads and poorly equipped airports, hampers access to key destinations.
