The Great Egyptian Museum announces its long-awaited opening to the world

The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), considered the most ambitious museum project in Egypt and one of the most relevant globally, is preparing to officially open its doors to the world. After years of planning, construction and international expectation, the grand opening will mark a before and after in the preservation and presentation of ancient Egypt's legacy.

Located on the outskirts of Cairo, just two kilometers from the iconic Giza Plateau, where the pyramids and the Great Sphinx stand, the museum is shaping up to be a cultural destination of the first order. This monumental site will not only stand out for its avant-garde architecture and strategic location, but also for housing the most extensive collection ever assembled dedicated to an ancient civilization.

Although it has been receiving visitors on a limited basis since December 2023 through special tours and pre-events, the announcement of a worldwide opening marks a milestone that has been awaited for more than two decades. Since its conception in 2002 and the start of construction in 2005, the project has faced a number of logistical, archaeological and financial challenges. However, the joint effort of the Egyptian government, cultural institutions and international experts has resulted in a world-class venue that seeks to project Egypt as a global benchmark in heritage and tourism.

The Grand Egyptian Museum covers an area of almost 500,000 square meters and combines state-of-the-art technology with advanced museum techniques. Its design, by the Irish firm Heneghan Peng Architects, blends harmoniously with the desert environment, offering visitors a sensory experience from the very first moment. One of its most striking elements is the main lobby, where a colossal statue of Ramses II, carefully transported from the ancient city of Mit Rahina and restored for the occasion, rises imposingly.
