With over 40 heads of state and numerous ministers attending the 2025 summit, South Africa has a unique opportunity to showcase its culture, heritage, tourism, and innovation. This event will highlight the country's technological, industrial, and commercial advancements, with the hope that international delegates will return for private visits after experiencing South African hospitality during the summit.
On a continental level, South Africa will use its G20 presidency to emphasize the African Union’s Agenda 2063, titled "The Africa We Want," and advocate for the aspirations and interests of the developing world. This includes promoting the United Nations' 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals, food and energy security, industrialization, and increasing trade and investment to support job creation and social security.
The G20 presidency will also serve as a catalyst for inclusive growth, poverty reduction, mitigating rising living costs, and strengthening South Africa’s governance and development agenda. Phophi Ramathuba, Premier of Limpopo Province, stated that her region is ready to "engage with the world" and capitalize on the opportunities arising from the G20 presidency. She further emphasized that outreach programs will strengthen ties, promote collaboration, and ensure that global economic policies translate into meaningful opportunities for local communities.
In the context of international cooperation, South Africa has maintained strong relations with China. In a joint statement, both countries committed to enhancing cooperation in key areas such as infrastructure, logistics, trade and investment, manufacturing, agricultural processing, energy and resources, the financial sector, the digital economy, science and technology, and green development. This collaboration aims to align the joint construction of the Belt and Road Initiative with South Africa’s Reconstruction and Economic Recovery Plan, promoting mutual benefits and shared prosperity.
Additionally, during the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, China pledged to provide 360 billion yuan (approximately $50.69 billion) over the next three years to support various initiatives in Africa. These include implementing 30 infrastructure projects aimed at improving trade connectivity and launching 30 clean energy projects. These investments are designed to drive economic growth and promote sustainable development across the African continent.
The G20 presidency presents South Africa with a unique opportunity to lead global discussions on critical issues affecting both the country and the African continent. By focusing on areas such as industrialization, food and energy security, and sustainable development, South Africa can shape the global agenda to reflect Africa’s priorities and aspirations. Moreover, by strengthening partnerships with countries like China, South Africa can leverage investment and cooperation opportunities that benefit its citizens and contribute to the country’s economic development.
South Africa’s active participation in the G20 also underscores its commitment to multilateralism and international cooperation. By assuming a leadership role in this forum, the country demonstrates its willingness to address global challenges and collaborate with other nations to find effective solutions. This approach enhances South Africa’s position in the international community and highlights its potential as a key player on the global stage.
