South Africa assumed the presidency of the Group of 20 (G20) on December 1, 2024, and is preparing to host the G20 Leaders’ Summit in November 2025. This role provides the country with a significant platform to advance its national, continental, and multilateral interests. Thandi Morake, Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, highlighted the importance of the G20 as a forum to address national priorities and strengthen South-South cooperation.

The G20 presidency represents the largest national project South Africa has undertaken to date, with expectations of substantial economic benefits. A boost is anticipated in sectors such as tourism, transportation, hospitality, dining, and entertainment across the country’s nine provinces. Additionally, the presidency is expected to generate numerous direct and indirect jobs during this period and beyond.
