Russia proposes resumption of direct flights to the United States

In an effort to improve bilateral relations, Russia has proposed to the United States the resumption of direct flights between the two countries. The initiative was presented during a meeting in Istanbul, Turkey, where diplomats from both nations discussed normalising the operations of their respective embassies, which have been affected by staff expulsions and sanctions in recent years.

The Russian Foreign Ministry described the talks as ‘substantive and constructive’, stressing the need to overcome obstacles inherited from previous administrations. In addition to addressing issues related to the functioning of diplomatic missions, Russia specifically proposed the possibility of restoring direct air traffic with the United States.

Air restrictions between Russia and the US were implemented in 2022, when the US, along with allies such as Canada and the European Union, banned Russian aircraft from their airspace in response to the conflict in Ukraine. In retaliation, Russia closed its airspace to several Western nations, leading to the suspension of direct flights and significantly affecting international routes.
