The city reinforces the brand ‘Origin of the Way’ and promotes key events such as the 950th anniversary of the opening of the Holy Ark and the 10th anniversary of the declaration of the Primitive Way as a World Heritage Site.
Oviedo City Council has taken a decisive step in the internationalisation of its historical and religious heritage with its recent adhesion to the World Religious Tourism Network (WRTN). The city has thus become a key reference point within this organisation, promoted by the Tourism and Society Think Tank (TSTT), which seeks to strengthen religious tourism in various regions of the world.
This milestone coincides with a year of special significance for the city, marked by historical and religious celebrations that reinforce its tourist appeal. These include the 950th anniversary of the opening of the Holy Ark, an event of great importance that was once presided over by King Alfonso VI and his court on their pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. Inside is the Sudarium Domini, the cloth that covered the face of Christ after his crucifixion, one of the most important relics of Christianity.
Another outstanding event is the tenth anniversary of the declaration of the Primitive Way as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. This route, recognised as the first Jacobean pilgrimage, has its origins in Oviedo, home of King Alfonso II the Chaste, considered the first pilgrim in history.
Oviedo, a key destination for religious tourism
The integration in the WRTN reinforces Oviedo's position as a reference destination for religious and cultural tourism. The Councillor for Tourism, Alfredo García Quintana, underlined the importance of this membership: ‘Inclusion in the World Network of Religious Destinations will allow us to make our history known to a wider public. It is a powerful platform that will attract international visitors interested in discovering the cradle of the Jacobean routes and the place where one of the main relics of Christianity is kept’.
In addition, García Quintana stressed that this action strengthens the municipal tourism strategy, consolidating the brand Oviedo, Origin of the Way as a reference in cultural and spiritual values.
