Avolon expands its fleet with 90 new Airbus aircraft

Avolon, one of the world’s leading aircraft leasing companies, has confirmed a major new order with Airbus for a total of 90 aircraft: 75 A321neo narrow-body jets and 15 A330-900neo wide-body aircraft, with deliveries scheduled through 2033. This deal brings Avolon’s total commitments with Airbus to 264 A321neos and 79 A330neos across its portfolio.

The choice of A321neo and A330neo models responds to their high fuel efficiency, with the A321neo delivering around 20% lower fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions, and the A330neo up to 25% less, compared to previous-generation aircraft. Both models also achieve up to a 50% reduction in noise emissions. The A321neo can accommodate up to 244 passengers with a range exceeding 7,400 km, while the A330neo, powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines, can fly more than 13,300 km non-stop and features the Airspace cabin for improved comfort.

Andy Cronin, CEO of Avolon, stated, “This order reflects our strong confidence in long-term demand for new aircraft. Our financial strength enables us to support airlines’ fleet renewal and expansion plans over the next decade. Both models are in high demand, and we expect this trend to continue.” Cronin also noted that the order strengthens the long-standing strategic relationship between Avolon and Airbus.

With this latest agreement, Avolon is set to exceed 1,100 aircraft owned, managed, or on order, following its $5 billion acquisition in January 2025 of 118 aircraft from competitor Castlelake Aviation. The Dublin-based lessor expects to receive around 70 aircraft annually from Airbus and Boeing between 2026 and 2027, allowing it to meet rising global demand that may soon outpace supply.

From Airbus, Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, Executive Vice President of Commercial Aircraft Sales, emphasized that “lessors are excellent market indicators. Avolon’s endorsement highlights the strong appeal of both models among operators and confirms their technological and operational excellence.”

This deal is a clear sign of confidence in the aviation sector’s recovery and expansion in the post-pandemic era. The A321neos will bolster regional and domestic route capacity, while the A330neos are well suited for long-haul services with improved sustainability and passenger comfort. Avolon plans to offer these aircraft to a wide range of airline clients, from low-cost carriers to full-service airlines, in both emerging and established markets.

The large-scale order also reinforces Avolon’s position as one of the world’s top leasing firms, currently ranked second globally by fleet size. The move underscores its capability to channel strategic investment in aviation and provide airlines with flexible solutions for fleet renewal and growth.

Moreover, by selecting the A320neo and A330neo families, Avolon aligns with the latest trends in sustainable aviation. These aircraft offer improved fuel efficiency, lower noise, and compatibility with sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), making them ideal for meeting future environmental regulations and operational standards.
