Morocco reaches historic record with 17.4 million tourists in 2024

13-01-25

Morocco has achieved an unprecedented milestone in its tourism sector by welcoming 17.4 million visitors in 2024, representing a 20% increase over the previous year. This remarkable growth has been achieved two years ahead of schedule, the Ministry of Tourism reported.

Tourism plays a crucial role in the Moroccan economy, contributing approximately 7% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and generating around two million direct and indirect jobs. This sector has been strengthened by improved air connectivity, with the opening of new routes facilitating access to the country. Airlines such as Royal Air Maroc, Iberia and Ryanair have expanded their range of destinations, contributing significantly to the increase in visitors.

Morocco's diversity and cultural richness continue to be key factors in its tourist appeal. From the vibrant souks of Marrakech and Fez, to the majestic landscapes of the Sahara Desert and the beaches of Agadir, the country offers unique experiences that combine tradition and modernity. Destinations such as Chefchaouen, known as the blue city, have gained popularity, consolidating themselves as points of interest for travelers.

This record number of visitors comes at a key moment, as Morocco prepares to host the African Cup of Nations (CAN) at the end of the year. This major sporting event is expected to further boost tourism inflows and strengthen the country's position as a benchmark destination on the African continent.

The Moroccan government has implemented a comprehensive strategy to promote tourism, focusing on diversification of supply, infrastructure improvement and international promotion. Investment in the renovation of hotel facilities and the promotion of emerging destinations have been fundamental pillars in this roadmap. In addition, work has been done to simplify procedures to facilitate foreign investment in the tourism sector, creating a more attractive environment for investors.

The community of Moroccans living abroad has played a significant role in this growth, representing a considerable share of visitors. Their contribution is reflected not only in arrival figures, but also in the promotion of the country as a tourist destination in their countries of residence.

In terms of revenue, from January to November 2024, tourism receipts increased by 7.2%, reaching a record 104 billion dirhams.

This increase reflects the effectiveness of the policies implemented and the growing international demand for Morocco as a destination.

Looking ahead, Morocco has set ambitious goals for tourism. The country aims to welcome 26 million tourists by 2030, coinciding with its role as co-host of the FIFA World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal.

This objective is part of a strategic vision to position Morocco among the top 15 tourist destinations worldwide.

Sustainability is also at the heart of Morocco's tourism strategy. Initiatives are being developed to promote responsible tourism that respects the environment and local communities. Ecotourism programs and the promotion of sustainable practices in the hotel industry are examples of efforts in this direction.

Morocco has demonstrated a remarkable ability to adapt and grow in the competitive global tourism sector. The combination of a rich cultural heritage, infrastructure improvements and an effective government strategy has enabled the country to reach record numbers in 2024, setting the stage for an even more promising future in the next decade.
