03-01-25

The Peruvian chocolate sector has experienced remarkable growth in 2024, with exports exceeding US$55 million between January and October.

This increase reflects Peru's consolidation as a producer and exporter of high-quality chocolates, diversifying its supply and expanding its presence in international markets.

The United States remains the main importer of Peruvian chocolates, purchasing products worth US$21.8 million, representing 39% of total exports.

Canada is in second place with purchases totaling US$10.8 million, showing a notable growth of 123% compared to the same period of the previous year. Other significant destinations include the Netherlands, Chile, Bolivia, Mexico, Ecuador, Australia, Colombia and the United Kingdom, demonstrating the geographic diversification of Peruvian exports.

Product diversification and value added

Peruvian companies have innovated in the diversification of their products, offering conventional and organic chocolates in various presentations. Among the varieties are those that incorporate ingredients such as dehydrated fruits (mango, pineapple, blueberries), quinoa crunch, Maras salt, cañihua, mint and cinnamon, in addition to the traditional combinations with almonds, raisins and peanuts. This diversification has made it possible to meet the preferences of different markets and consumers, increasing the added value of Peruvian products.

Organic chocolates: a booming segment

Organic chocolates have shown significant growth, generating revenues of US$23.9 million, representing a 32% increase over the same period in 2023. This segment stands out for its sustainable production and its contribution to rural development in regions such as San Martín, Ayacucho, Amazonas, and Piura, improving the living conditions of local farmers and responding to the growing global demand for organic and ethically produced products.

Cup chocolates: tradition and international market

Cup chocolate, traditional in Peruvian gastronomy, has also found niches in international markets. Exports in this segment reached US$65,854, an increase of 59% compared to the same period last year. The United States is the main destination, concentrating most of the shipments with an increase of 72%, followed by countries such as Japan, Chile, the Netherlands, Italy and Switzerland.

Leading companies in the sector

Several Peruvian companies stand out in the field of chocolate exports. These include Machu Picchu Foods, Compañía Nacional de Chocolates de Perú, Arcor de Perú, Nestlé Perú and Fábrica de Chocolates La Ibérica. In the cup chocolate segment, Importadora y Exportadora Doña Isabel S.A.C., CV Eximp S.A.C. and Fusion Foods S.A.C. stand out. These companies have played a fundamental role in the expansion and consolidation of Peruvian chocolate in international markets.

Outlook and challenges for the future

The sustained growth of Peruvian chocolate exports reflects the strength and competitiveness of the sector. However, to maintain and enhance this trend, it is essential to continue innovating in product diversification, ensure the quality and sustainability of production, and strengthen its presence in international markets. In addition, it is essential to promote policies that support small producers and encourage sustainable agricultural practices, ensuring the continuity and expansion of this important sector for the Peruvian economy.

The performance of the chocolate sector in 2024 is evidence not only of the quality and diversity of Peruvian products, but also of the joint efforts of producers, companies and government entities to position Peru as a benchmark in the chocolate industry worldwide.
