Venice faces challenges from tourist overcrowding during Carnival 2025

The Venice Carnival 2025, held from 14 February to 4 March, has once again highlighted the problems arising from overcrowded tourism in the city of canals. The inaugural event, a water procession along the Grand Canal, attracted more than 60,000 spectators, according to Il Nord Est. This massive turnout caused significant congestion, especially at emblematic points such as the Rialto Bridge, where there was pushing and shoving, arguments and even anxiety attacks among the attendees.

Local authorities were forced to intervene to manage the situation. The police implemented diversions, prohibiting access from San Bortolo and redirecting people to the Lovo Bridge. However, these measures proved insufficient in the face of the overwhelming number of visitors who thronged both the central area and the adjacent streets.

During the opening weekend of the carnival, the city received approximately 150,000 visitors, half of whom were tourists staying overnight in Venice. This massive influx has reignited debate about the city's capacity to handle large concentrations of tourists and the effectiveness of measures implemented to control the flow of tourists.
