South Africa is also in talks with a number of airlines to improve connectivity with India and China. She noted that following the previous relaxation of visa requirements for Kenyan and Ghanaian nationals, the country experienced a significant increase in tourist arrivals from these nations.
Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber noted that inefficient visa issuance discourages potential tourists from visiting South Africa. The country therefore plans to expand TTOS coverage to include more countries in the future.
Tshifhiwa Tshivhengwa, executive director of the South African Tourism Business Council, an organisation representing the private sector in the travel and tourism industry, said the private sector has been calling for the easing of visa restrictions to attract more tourists to the country. ‘Under TTOS, tour operators will be able to conduct their activities in a more professional manner and attract more visitors,’ he added.
Last weekend, South Africa welcomed the first group of 15 Chinese tourists under TTOS. China and India are two key markets for tourism in South Africa; according to Department of Tourism data, the country received 41,651 tourists from China and 75,541 from India in 2024.
The implementation of the TTOS is part of South Africa's broader strategy to revitalise its tourism sector, which has faced challenges in recent years due to various global and local factors. By easing the visa process and improving air connectivity, the country seeks to position itself as an attractive and accessible destination for international tourists.
Collaborating with trusted tour operators not only streamlines bureaucratic procedures, but also ensures a quality experience for visitors, strengthening South Africa's reputation in the global tourism market.
With the planned expansion of the TTOS and ongoing negotiations to improve air routes, South Africa is demonstrating its commitment to the sustainable growth of tourism, recognising its importance as an economic driver and cultural bridge between nations.
As the country moves forward with these initiatives, it is expected that more tourists from various parts of the world will consider South Africa as their next destination, attracted by its rich cultural diversity, stunning natural landscapes and the warmth of its people.
