PortMiami inaugurates state-of-the-art cruise terminal

14-02-25

Last week, PortMiami celebrated the opening of its new AA Terminal, one of the largest and most technologically advanced in the world. The MSC Seascape was the first ship to dock at this facility, marking the beginning of a new era for the cruise industry in Miami.

Construction of this terminal began in March 2022, at a time when the cruise industry was recovering from the challenges imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic. With an investment of $450 million, Terminal AA is designed to handle up to 36,000 passengers per day and features three piers capable of simultaneously accommodating some of the world's largest cruise ships.

The MSC Seascape, which set sail from PortMiami's Terminal C on 1 February, offers seven-night itineraries in the Eastern Caribbean and the Bahamas. The new terminal not only enhances the embarkation and disembarkation experience for passengers, but also reinforces Miami's position as the cruise capital of the world.

Designed by Arquitectonica, Terminal AA is located at the eastern end of the port, offering a breathtaking view for both departing and arriving ships. The facility includes parking for 2,400 vehicles and is equipped with shore power technology, allowing ships to connect to the local power grid and reduce emissions while docked.

PortMiami is renowned for housing some of the world's most modern cruise terminals, designed to facilitate fast and efficient transit of passengers from land to sea. It has been voted the best cruise homeport in the United States, being home to 23 world-renowned cruise lines and the main departure point for sailings to the Bahamas, Mexico and the Caribbean.

The new terminal will also be the operational base for MSC Cruises' largest and most environmentally advanced cruise ships, including MSC World America, scheduled to debut in Miami in April 2025. This flagship will be the company's first in the US market to be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), highlighting MSC's commitment to environmental sustainability.

The opening of Terminal AA is a significant milestone for PortMiami and the cruise industry as a whole. With its capacity to handle an unprecedented volume of passengers and its focus on sustainability, the terminal is poised to set new standards in port operations and customer experience. It also reinforces Miami's role as a hub for cruise tourism, attracting travellers from around the world and contributing significantly to the local economy.

The investment in this state-of-the-art infrastructure reflects confidence in the continued growth of the cruise industry and a commitment to providing exceptional passenger experiences. As more state-of-the-art ships choose Miami as their home port, the city is expected to continue to lead the industry in innovation and service.

The opening of the AA Terminal at PortMiami marks the beginning of a new era for cruising in Miami, combining advanced technology, sustainability and an enhanced passenger experience. This development not only benefits travellers, but also strengthens Miami's position as a global leader in the cruise industry.
