The municipality of Calasparra, located in the Region of Murcia, has taken a significant step in its international projection by officially joining the World Religious Tourism Network. This milestone has been driven by its mayor, Teresa García, who showed her interest in the initiative since mid-2023. However, it was not until the recent opening of Spain in this framework, in January 2024, during the International Tourism Trade Fair (FITUR), that this incorporation became a reality.
During FITUR 2024, Mayor Teresa García collected the certificate accrediting Calasparra as part of this prestigious network from the hands of Director General Pilar Valdés. This recognition represents a great opportunity for the municipality, which is thus positioned on the international map as a benchmark for religious, cultural and gastronomic tourism.
The Sanctuary of Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza is, without a doubt, one of the greatest attractions of the municipality and the main reason why Calasparra has been considered to be part of the World Network of Religious Tourism. Every year, thousands of pilgrims visit this spiritual enclave, especially during the traditional pilgrimages and festivities in honor of the Virgin of Hope, generating a significant impact on tourism and the local economy.
Mayor Teresa García receives the certificate from the general director of the Network Pilar Valdés.
However, Calasparra is not only a pilgrimage destination, but also offers a wide variety of cultural and gastronomic attractions. Its rice with denomination of origin is one of the most emblematic and valued products of the Murcian gastronomy, being an attraction for lovers of good cuisine. In addition, its natural and heritage environment is equally impressive, highlighting the Cuevas del Puerto, a prehistoric enclave of great archaeological value that allows visitors to travel back in time and learn about the history of the region through its geological formations.
This incorporation into the World Network is a unique opportunity for Calasparra in terms of international projection, as it will facilitate the arrival of tourists and pilgrims from around the world, promoting local economic development and the preservation of its heritage. Mayor Teresa Garcia has stressed the importance of this step and has indicated that it will continue to work to enhance the tourist and cultural offerings of the municipality, ensuring that visitors can enjoy a unique and unforgettable experience.
With its inclusion in the World Religious Tourism Network, Calasparra reinforces its identity as an integral destination, where spirituality, history and gastronomy combine to offer travelers a differentiated and high value tourism proposal. This recognition not only represents an achievement for the town, but also a commitment to the promotion and conservation of its cultural and natural wealth.
