El Salvador’s Ministry of Tourism (MITUR), led by Minister Morena Ileana Valdez Vigil, is reinforcing its commitment to consolidating and expanding rural and cultural tourism nationwide, positioning it as a strategic pillar for tourism growth and broader economic and social development. The initiative reflects a clear policy direction: diversify the country’s tourism offer not only to attract more domestic and international visitors, but also to strengthen local economies and employment opportunities in rural areas and communities with a strong cultural identity.

Rural and cultural tourism in El Salvador is understood as a form of travel that enables visitors to experience communities in an authentic, meaningful way—through traditions, heritage, local history and natural settings. This segment generates tangible benefits because it channels visitor spending directly to families, small businesses, community enterprises and local service providers. By leveraging the cultural and natural assets of each territory, rural and cultural tourism also helps distribute tourism income more evenly, reducing the historical concentration of benefits in a limited number of urban or coastal areas and supporting a more balanced model of territorial development.
