European Union: Advanced scanners end 100ml cabin limit and device removal requirement
01-08-25
The European Union has approved a historic shift in airport security procedures: next-generation scanners are now authorized to allow passengers to carry liquids in containers larger than 100 milliliters and eliminate the need to remove electronic devices from hand luggage during screening. This decision, officially announced on July 29, 2025, clears the way for the use of advanced technology at around 700 security checkpoints in 21 member states.
This measure represents a major departure from the policy reinstated in September 2024, which reimposed strict limits such as the 100ml per container rule and the obligation to remove liquids and electronics during security checks—even at airports that had previously implemented C3 or G3 scanners. With the approval of the European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC), Brussels has now lifted that ban, which had delayed the full deployment of this technology for more than a year.
