Spain: The Easter Week Board of Medina del Campo becomes a founding member of the World Religious Tourism Network

Last Easter Sunday, a symbolic day for its message of hope and joy, was a new milestone for the Junta de Semana Santa de Medina del Campo as it became a Founding Member of the World Religious Tourism Network.

The Territorial Director for Europe of the WTRN, Edit Székely, participated in the mass and the subsequent procession of the Encounter, and presented the certificate of membership to David Muriel, president of the Easter Week Board.

The presence of Mrs. Székely highlighted the international projection of Medina del Campo and its Holy Week.

The World Religious Tourism Network is a programme of Tourism and Society Think Tank, made up of professional experts in tourism and society. The aim of the World Religious Tourism Network is to promote tourism and religious culture in all continents of the world, to create opportunities for new destinations and to strengthen the leadership of those religious destinations that are most recognised.

Religious tourism contributes to intercultural understanding in a respectful and ethical manner, engages and impacts positively on local communities, and serves as a motivation for 1 in 5 trips undertaken globally.

In 1411 the Dominican Saint Vincent Ferrer, during his visit to Medina del Campo, instituted the Processions of Discipline, the first in Spain. Therefore, the brotherhoods of Medina del Campo bring a message of hope and joy to the whole world, for managing to conserve and transmit to future generations a legacy of more than 600 years.

The artistic values that characterise its processions combine tradition and history with modernity, through Renaissance carvings by Francisco del Rincón, Sebastián Ducete, Juan Picardo or Beltrán Otazu, and the works of the contemporary sculptor from Zamora, Ricardo Flecha.

The role of the Junta de Semana Santa of Medina del Campo is also of great relevance in the brotherhood meetings on a national level. In 2006 the XIX National Meeting of Penitential Guilds, in 2011 the IV National Meeting of Women Guilds, in 2016 the VI National Congress of Guilds and in 2024 the XXXV National Meeting of Guilds.

The Easter Week Board of Medina del Campo will participate in the World Network of Religious Tourism through its Holy Week interpretation centre, the San Vicente Ferrer Cultural Centre, a place that allows the message of Holy Week to be understood throughout the year and, in an immersive way, makes it possible to experience the experiences of the brotherhoods.

The San Vicente Ferrer Cultural Centre, apart from the interpretative space, also has a multi-purpose meeting room, where they hold, for example, the assemblies of the Junta de Semana Santa (including since 2011 the Junta de Cofradías de Castilla y León twice a year), as well as presentations, talks, round tables or workshops. Its location is extraordinary, just a few metres from the Plaza Mayor.

The Centre also stands out for its active role in the cultural life of the town. In the old chapel of the Hospital del Amparo, temporary exhibitions, rehearsals, concerts, conferences and cultural activities in general are organised which are open to all the associative fabric of Medina del Campo and to all the entities collaborating with the San Vicente Ferrer Centre, especially the integrated Business Club.

The San Vicente Ferrer Cultural Centre coordinates the opening of the temples of the town for tourist visits, which includes up to eleven temples. This Route allows you to discover the history of the town through the most complete collection of Renaissance processional imagery in Spain, and all this heritage is contemplated not in a museum but in its own places of worship: the churches, hermitages and convents of Medina del Campo, among them some of great religious repercussion, such as the Church of Santiago el Real, a model for the construction of Jesuit temples; the Convent of San José (MM. Carmelitas) which was the second foundation of Santa Teresa de Jesús, or the Monastery of Santa Clara and its Chapel of San Juan de la Cruz where the saint sang mass for the first time.
