A sensory experience that transforms Toledo's nightlife
Since its opening in December 2023, Lumina has established itself as one of the most important night-time cultural activities in the country. With a duration of 50 minutes, it offers an immersive and sensory journey through the history, art and spirituality of the Cathedral, combining 3D projections, surround sound, lighting effects, aromatherapy and a soundtrack specially composed for the occasion.
This proposal has been a real revolution for the city's night-time tourist offer. The arrival of visitors seeking to live the experience has significantly increased overnight stays and boosted the economy of the historic centre, benefiting hotels, restaurants and local businesses. Toledo, which traditionally saw its tourist activity decline at nightfall, has found in Lumina a new cultural and economic engine.
Technology at the service of the soul: an international model
Beyond its success with the general public, Lumina Toledo Cathedral has been hailed by experts in audiovisual integration as an exemplary model of fusion between technology and religious heritage. According to the jury of the AV Integration Awards, the experience has been recognised for its ‘impressive integration of videomapping into the monumental architecture of the Cathedral’, achieving a ‘harmonious fusion’ between the projections and the ornamental richness of the building.
The development of the project has been led by Meraki Cultura Audiovisual in collaboration with the Cabildo Primado, and has required more than six years of research, design and execution. The installation includes more than 4 kilometres of cabling, 150 LED spotlights, 23 state-of-the-art projectors and a complex custom-designed audiovisual control system.
One of the biggest technical challenges was the creation of a complete three-dimensional model of the Cathedral, comprising more than 10 million polygons and 5,000 high-resolution photographs. This digital elevation served as the basis for integrating the projections with full respect for the architectural forms and historical value of the temple.
Behind the project is a multidisciplinary team of 29 professionals: engineers, sound, lighting and videomapping specialists, computer scientists, historians, scriptwriters, craftsmen and cultural management experts. The entire development has been based on three fundamental pillars: absolute respect for the sacred character of the temple, heritage conservation and commitment to environmental sustainability.
A foretaste of the 8th Centenary Jubilee (2026-2027)
More than an artistic proposal, Lumina has been conceived as a tool for contemporary catechesis and visual evangelisation, bringing the spiritual dimension of the Cathedral closer to audiences of all ages and nationalities. The experience, accessible through a universal audiovisual language, is emerging as one of the most outstanding activities of the Jubilee Year of the 8th Centenary, which will take place between October 2026 and October 2027.
During this period, thousands of national and international pilgrims are expected to arrive. Lumina will serve as a gateway to experience, understand and feel the legacy of faith and culture that the Primate Cathedral represents, reaffirming its role as a spiritual, artistic and universal welcoming centre.
A living, constantly evolving experience
Thanks to its technological and modular nature, Lumina is a living and adaptable proposal, capable of evolving and transforming according to the liturgical calendar, special festivities or new themes that can enrich the visual story. This flexibility guarantees its continuity and future projection, positioning Toledo as an innovative destination at the forefront of religious tourism in the 21st century.
With this recognition, Lumina Toledo Cathedral stands as a symbol of the dialogue between tradition and modernity, where technology is placed at the service of faith, art and emotion. A unique experience in the world that transforms every night into an opportunity to reconnect with beauty, history and the sacred.
