Singer Katy Perry and Lauren Sanchez, journalist and partner of Jeff Bezos, marked a milestone by being part of the first all-female space crew since 1963. Aboard Blue Origin's New Shepard rocket, they completed a suborbital flight that reached the Kármán line, the recognised boundary of space, giving all six members several minutes of weightlessness before returning to Earth.
The NS-31 mission included, in addition to Perry and Sánchez, journalist Gayle King, aerospace engineer Aisha Bowe, activist Amanda Nguyen and producer Kerianne Flynn. The flight, lasting just over ten minutes, symbolises a breakthrough in the inclusion of women in space exploration and commercial space tourism.
Lauren Sanchez, a certified pilot and vice president of the Bezos Earth Fund, led the initiative and personally selected the participants, seeking to inspire future generations of women in scientific and technological fields. For her part, Katy Perry said her participation was meant to show her daughter and the world that dreams, no matter how ambitious, can be achieved.
