UK implements new ETA system for international travelers

The United Kingdom will begin to gradually implement the ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) from November 27, 2024. This new system will affect citizens of countries that currently do not require a visa to enter, such as Paraguay, from January 8, 2025. The ETA, costing £10, will allow multiple trips to the UK over two years, with stays of up to six months. Although it is not a visa, it strengthens border control and security in the country.
This system is similar to other programs such as the Canadian ETA or the U.S. ESTA and is part of the British government's effort to digitize borders. While visas will still be required for some nationalities, the ETA covers the majority of travelers who until now only needed their passport to enter the country.
The introduction of this system also affects minors and transit travelers. Currently, the ETA is already in use for some Middle Eastern countries such as Qatar, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates. To apply, travelers must register on an online platform, and once approved, the authorization will allow them to stay for up to six months.
The impact of this measure will be significant for travelers from more than 90 countries, including many Latin Americans. This new authorization is expected to streamline entry processes to the UK and ensure greater security, with a focus on digital monitoring and control of those entering the country.
The transition to a more digitized system responds to the growing need to improve security and efficiency in the immigration process. However, the implementation of the ETA also represents a major change for many travelers who were not used to having to complete pre-trip formalities. The long-term implications remain to be seen, but the ETA could influence the way tourists plan their visits to the UK, especially in terms of anticipating their travel and complying with electronic requirements.
This change underscores the UK's commitment to security in a global context where border control is a priority. As it is fully rolled out, travelers are advised to be aware of the specific details and requirements to avoid mishaps on future trips.
