India's Minister of Tourism and Culture, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, announced ambitious plans to position India among the world's top 10 tourism destinations in the next five years. Speaking at the International Economic Forum, Shekhawat underlined the rich cultural heritage and mystique that attract millions of tourists every year. Despite this, India's share in global tourist arrivals is currently modest at only 0.8%.
The minister highlighted the government's efforts to raise India's position in the global tourism market, where it currently ranks 39th out of 119 countries. According to Shekhawat, tourism contributes to 10.4 per cent of the global economy, while in India this figure is 7.9 per cent. However, the minister expressed confidence that India will surpass the global average, taking this figure to 10 per cent or more in the coming years.
One of the key strategies to achieve this goal is the development of tourist routes to regions that have so far not been very popular with foreign visitors. Currently, 65% of tourists are concentrated in only 9 of India's 28 states, plus the national district of Delhi. However, interest in lesser known regions is growing, which is seen as a positive sign for the future of the sector.

In addition to the development of new routes, the minister emphasised the importance of promoting India's culture and cuisine. Since 2019, the number of online searches related to Indian culture and cuisine has increased by 48%, reflecting a growing international interest in the country as a tourist destination.
To facilitate the growth of tourism, the Indian government is implementing various initiatives. These include improving tourism infrastructure, creating new attractions and actively promoting India in key markets. Efforts are also being made to simplify the visa process and improve air connectivity, essential factors in attracting more international visitors.
Minister Shekhawat also emphasised the importance of sustainability in tourism development. India is committed to responsible tourism and is working to ensure that the growth of the sector does not compromise the country's natural and cultural resources. This includes promoting sustainable tourism practices and protecting India's cultural and natural heritage.
In conclusion, India is on an upward trajectory in the global tourism arena, with a clear and ambitious plan to become one of the world's leading destinations. With its cultural richness, growing popularity and a government committed to developing the sector, India is well positioned to achieve its goals in the coming years.
This effort will not only strengthen the country's economy, but also consolidate India as a destination that offers a unique and unforgettable experience to tourists from all over the world.
