The World Travel Market (WTM) London, one of the most influential events in the global travel industry, has opened its 44th edition at ExCeL London, bringing together more than 40,000 industry professionals. The event, which runs from 5-7 November 2024, is expected to generate a significant economic impact on the British capital, estimated at approximately $238 million.
Compared to previous editions, WTM London 2024 has seen a 7% growth in the number of exhibitors, reaching more than 4,000 participating companies. These include tourism boards, hotels, transport services, technology companies and associations from around the world. This increase reflects the recovery and dynamism of the global tourism sector.
The show attracts a significant international audience, with 82% of attendees coming from outside the UK. These international visitors contribute to the local economic boost through spending on transport, accommodation and entertainment during their stay in London. It is estimated that 40% of visitors stay three days in the city, while 33% extend their stay to seven days and 9% stay at least nine days.
The influx of tourism professionals to WTM not only strengthens trade relationships and business opportunities in the sector, but also directly benefits London's economy. Juliette Losardo, Director of Exhibitors at WTM London, said: ‘As the travel and tourism industry negotiates significant value deals at WTM, we are proud that this event also has a significant impact on our host city, London. The variety of accommodation, world-class dining and abundant attractions on offer in the city are a huge draw for our attendees, many of whom take advantage of WTM to add leisure days, further boosting spending in the local economy.’
This year's WTM puts a special emphasis on sustainability and technological innovation in tourism. A number of conferences and workshops have been organised to address topics such as regenerative tourism, the adoption of emerging technologies and strategies to promote sustainable practices in the industry. These topics reflect current trends and the demands of contemporary travellers, who are looking for responsible and technologically advanced experiences.
WTM London 2024 has more than 135 National Tourism Organisations participating, representing a 9% increase on previous years. This increase highlights the interest of international destinations in attracting travellers and promoting their tourism offerings in a competitive global marketplace. New exhibitors include Riyadh Air, Corendon Airlines and VIET EXPERIENCES TRAVEL, among others.
In addition to the exhibition, WTM offers attendees valuable networking and business connection opportunities. Networking events, such as the opening party and informal meeting sessions, are scheduled to facilitate interaction between industry professionals. These activities are designed to foster collaborations and strategic alliances that will drive growth and innovation in the travel industry.
