U.S. sees surge in international visitors in 2023

In 2023, the United States welcomed 66.5 million international visitors, marking a significant 31% increase from the previous year, according to the latest data from the National Travel and Tourism Office (NTTO).

This influx brings the total close to pre-pandemic levels, achieving 84% of the 79.4 million arrivals seen in 2019. Furthermore, NTTO predicts that by 2025, international visitor arrivals will surpass these levels, reaching an estimated 85.2 million.

New York emerged as the most-visited state by overseas travelers, reclaiming the top spot and surpassing Florida and California. Similarly, New York City led as the most-visited city, followed by Miami and Los Angeles. Notably, Puerto Rico saw an 85% increase in visitation compared to 2019, highlighting a significant recovery and growth in tourism interest in specific regions. Other states like Tennessee, Texas, and Georgia also saw notable increases in visitor numbers.

The travel trade statistics reveal a robust recovery in economic terms as well. International visitor spending in the U.S. reached $213.1 billion in 2023, a 29% increase from the previous year, accounting for 7.0% of total U.S. exports of goods and services. This expenditure supported approximately 1.6 million U.S. jobs. Conversely, spending by U.S. residents traveling abroad amounted to $215.4 billion, resulting in a slight travel trade deficit of $2.3 billion for the year.

These statistics not only reflect a rebound in travel and tourism but also underscore the sector's crucial role in fostering economic growth and job creation across the U.S. As international travel norms stabilize and tourism continues to recover, the U.S. is likely to see further increases in both visitor numbers and economic benefits.
