France: Nice implements curfew due to street insecurity

07-05-24

The city of Nice, the jewel of France's Côte d'Azur, has once again imposed a curfew, this time focused on children under 13 years of age, starting May 1 and during the summer, covering all meeting points in the city from 11:00 pm to 6:00 am. The measure, announced by Mayor Christian Estrosi, seeks to counter growing insecurity in the streets, especially in areas such as Vieux Nice or Moulins, where drug trafficking has generated concern, with minors often involved as lookouts or dealers.

This curfew, which was previously in place from 2009 until 2020, aims to reduce the involvement of minors as both victims and perpetrators of crime. Estrosi has emphasized the shared responsibility between parents and society at large, noting that the care of a child under 13 during the night should not be the sole decision of the mayor, but rather the result of parental common sense and effective law enforcement. In the absence of these elements, Estrosi has assumed the responsibility of implementing this measure to ensure the safety of the city.
