OpenAI looks to inspire European cities to use AI for tourism

Travel inspiration and planning have consistently been singled out as the main applications of generative artificial intelligence (AI) since the technology captured the world's attention just over a year ago.

Today, OpenAI, creator of ChatGPT, wants to help destinations understand how to use generative AI to enrich the visitor experience by offering personalized recommendations that go beyond generic "to do" lists.

This collaboration begins with two initiatives. First, OpenAI and the City of Dublin, in partnership with Dublin-based data consultancy, Data & Design, will create the "Dublin Itinerary Planner" concept test developed on top of GPT-4.

According to a press release, the tool will "demonstrate how tailored travel recommendations can make Dublin's rich cultural heritage and vibrant city life more accessible to visitors. This prototype has been designed to show the potential of generative AI in supporting unique and personalized experiences for visitors, rather than generic to-do lists."

Second, the partners will host a workshop in September for tourism destination leaders from across the European Union on how to use AI in aspects such as city promotion, destination branding, tourism engagement and itinerary planning.

"Our advanced AI technologies, including GPT-4, have the potential to revolutionize how people explore and experience destinations. We look forward to working together to create innovative solutions that will benefit both visitors and cities."

In addition, Rudi O'Reilly Meehan, founder of Data & Design, explained, "There is no doubt about the transformative power of OpenAI technologies like GPT-4. This collaboration is about creating tools that harness this power to benefit visitors to Dublin - in this case, by providing bespoke itineraries using generative AI. I'm delighted to be working with Dublin City Council and OpenAI in building this prototype, and the approach we're taking has great potential to expand to other cities and experiences."
