02-07-24

The Dominican Republic will host the first meeting of the UN Tourism Regional Commissions for the Americas and Africa. Under the theme "Promoting South-South cooperation through Investment, Education, Culture, Creative Industries and Innovation", the Caribbean country has proposed this meeting in the framework of its chairmanship of the UN Tourism Commission for the Americas.

The event will be held in Punta Cana from October 3 to 5, 2024 and will bring together tourism leaders from both continents. This meeting is a milestone, as it is the first time that two regions of the world have come together to discuss the future of tourism in their respective territories and to explore opportunities for collaboration in the development of the sector in the countries that comprise them.

Discussions will focus on promoting sustainable development to achieve the goals of the 2030 Agenda. They will seek to recognize and take advantage of the cultural diversity and shared tourism products, such as natural attractions and the rich cultural legacy of both regions. In addition, tourism will be promoted in both areas, fostering mutual exchange and cooperation.

The event will also highlight the important historical and cultural impact of Africa in the Americas, underscoring the contribution of Afro-descendant populations to the culture and society of the American continent.
