Tourists in Greece to pay new climate tax

13-01-24

The new tourist tax will be used to finance disaster recovery projects that may eventually take place in the country.

Representatives of the Greek National Tourism Organization say that the new "climate resilience tax" replaces the previous tourist tax and will only increase during the high season, from March to October. From November to February, the bed tax will remain the same as it has since its inception.

The tax will finance reconstruction projects following the severe forest fires and floods that occurred in Greece in 2023, it will be paid directly in local currency to the accommodation service provider prior to the departure of customers. For the payment of the tax, a separate receipt will be issued separately from the accommodation payment.

The tax will be added to the payment for stays in any type of accommodation, including all villas, hotels and rentals. The standard tax, which is charged in low season, ranges from 50 cents to €4 per night. The new climate tax for high season depends on the type of accommodation and goes up to €10 per night for stays in 5-star hotels.
