Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) has named Charles “Bud” Darr as its next president and CEO, effective February 3, 2025. This announcement marks a new phase for the organization, which seeks to consolidate its global leadership in the cruise industry while working on key initiatives related to sustainability, innovation and maritime regulation.

Bud Darr returns to CLIA after playing a pivotal role in the organization from 2010 to 2017, leading its maritime technical and regulatory efforts. For the past seven years, he has been executive vice president of maritime policy and government relations at MSC Group, where he played a key role in developing sustainability policies and managing relationships with international bodies.

His career includes a distinguished experience in the U.S. Coast Guard, where he served as deputy director of maritime and international law. In addition, he served in the U.S. Navy and Merchant Marine, accumulating decades of experience in maritime, regulatory and operational matters. Darr earned a degree in submarine nuclear engineering and a law degree from George Washington University, underscoring his strong technical and legal background.

Jason Liberty, chairman of CLIA's board of directors, praised Darr's appointment, noting his proven leadership and dedication to advancing environmental policies within the industry. “Bud's leadership and commitment to sustainability make him the ideal person to lead us into a new era of growth and innovation,” Liberty said.

As president and CEO, Darr will be at the forefront of CLIA's global strategy, leading initiatives that seek to achieve the ambitious sustainability goals set for 2050. These include reducing carbon emissions, promoting clean energy technologies and adopting responsible practices across the industry. Under his leadership, CLIA is expected to continue to set the standard in terms of environmental leadership and corporate responsibility.

The cruise industry faces significant challenges and opportunities in the current context. On the one hand, there is a growing demand for sustainable travel, forcing cruise lines to implement more environmentally friendly practices. On the other, technological advances and changing traveler expectations are transforming the customer experience, presenting an opportunity to innovate and differentiate in a competitive marketplace.

Darr will assume leadership at a time when CLIA is looking to strengthen its global influence and collaborate with governments, international bodies and other stakeholders to address critical issues such as maritime regulation, protection of marine ecosystems and passenger safety.

With his experience and strategic vision, Bud Darr will not only contribute to the efficient management of CLIA, but will also play a crucial role in shaping the future of the cruise industry. Under his leadership, CLIA hopes to establish itself as the industry's leading voice, advocating for policies that balance economic growth with environmental responsibility.

In Darr's own words, “It is an honor to return to CLIA at this critical time for the cruise industry. I am committed to working with our members to drive sustainability, innovation and operational excellence for the benefit of our members and the millions of people who enjoy cruising each year.”

The appointment of Bud Darr as president and CEO represents a significant step forward for CLIA and the cruise industry as a whole. His strong maritime background, combined with his commitment to sustainability and focus on innovation, positions him as a visionary leader capable of guiding CLIA into a promising future.

With this appointment, CLIA reaffirms its commitment to leading the transformation of the cruise industry, promoting responsible practices and adapting to the demands of an ever-changing world.
