In a context of recovery and growth of the tourism sector worldwide, the Colombian Association of Travel and Tourism Agencies (Anato) has projected a historic milestone for Colombia. According to the organization's estimates, the country will close 2023 with record foreign exchange income from tourism, consolidating its position as one of the key sectors in the national economy.

Anato forecasts that foreign exchange generated by tourism in 2023 will exceed US$6.5 billion, an unprecedented figure that reflects the sustained recovery after the pandemic. Paula Cortés Calle, executive president of Anato, highlighted the importance of this achievement by noting that tourism activity has not only resumed the dynamism prior to the health crisis, but has shown steady growth thanks to joint efforts between the public and private sectors.

“Tourism has proven to be a resilient industry. These figures are the result of the committed work of travel agencies, tour operators and the government, which have focused their strategies on promoting Colombia as a diverse and attractive destination,” said Cortés Calle.

The increase in international visitor arrivals has been a determining factor in achieving this record. According to preliminary data, in 2023 the flow of foreign tourists increased by 16% compared to 2022, a trend driven by the varied tourism offer that the country has managed to position in international markets.

Colombia has established itself as a preferred destination thanks to its cultural richness, biodiversity and unique experiences that include nature, historical and gastronomic tourism. In addition, air connectivity has improved significantly, facilitating the arrival of travelers from key markets such as the United States, Europe and Latin America.

The promotion of sustainable tourism has been another key factor in this growth. The implementation of policies focused on preserving natural resources and supporting local communities has strengthened the country's image as a responsible destination committed to the environment.

On the other hand, travel agencies have bet on the diversification of their offerings, adapting to global trends and the expectations of tourists, who are looking for authentic and personalized experiences. “Today more than ever, tourists value proposals that combine quality, sustainability and innovation, and Colombian companies are up to the challenge,” added the president of Anato.

Tourism is not only a source of income for the country, but also generates employment and stimulates other economic areas such as transportation, gastronomy and handicrafts. According to industry estimates, this growth could translate into more than 300,000 direct and indirect jobs.

Looking to the future, Anato remains optimistic. The association projects an even more promising 2024, with higher revenues and a steady flow of international visitors. “Colombia has unmatched tourism potential. If we continue to strengthen our strategies, the goal is for this sector to represent at least 5% of GDP in the coming years,” concluded Cortés Calle.
