In June 2024, international visitors spent a total of $21.2 billion on tourism-related activities in the United States, an increase of 14% compared to the same month last year, according to data from the National Travel and Tourism Office (NTTO). This increase reflects continued growth in the post-pandemic tourism sector, with foreign tourists spending an average of $697 million per day.

The breakdown of spending includes $11.7 billion for travel-related goods and services such as lodging, food, entertainment and transportation within the U.S. This accounted for 55% of the country's travel and tourism exports in June. U.S. airlines also benefited, generating $3.5 billion in passenger fare revenue, up 17% from a year earlier.

In addition, expenditures related to educational and health tourism, as well as those by temporary workers, reached $6.0 billion, up 9% compared to June 2023. These expenditures made up 28% of total U.S. travel and tourism exports in June.

Overall, during the first half of 2024, foreign visitors have contributed approximately $126.2 billion to the U.S. economy through tourism-related goods and services, a 17% increase compared to the same period in 2023.

This growth in international tourist spending not only underscores the sector's robust recovery, but also highlights the importance of tourism as a key driver of the U.S. economy. With tourism accounting for 23.1% of the country's services exports and 8.0% of total exports, the industry continues to play a crucial role in strengthening the U.S. trade balance.

Current trends indicate that this momentum will continue, driven by sustained demand for U.S. tourism experiences and an expanding international market that sees the United States as an attractive destination. Tourism authorities and businesses expect this positive trend to continue, contributing significantly to long-term economic growth and cementing the U.S. position as a top destination globally.

As we move through the year, it will be crucial to maintain and enhance policies that encourage foreign tourist arrivals, ensuring that the United States remains a competitive and accessible destination for visitors from around the world. This will involve not only improvements in infrastructure and services, but also effective marketing strategies that highlight the country's diverse cultural and recreational offerings.

The increase in international visitor spending in June 2024 not only reflects an economic recovery, but also reaffirms the importance of tourism as an essential sector to the U.S. economy. With tourism booming, the future of the sector looks bright, benefiting both local communities and the economy as a whole.
