Foreign visitor spending to the U.S. increases significantly in June 2024

In June 2024, international visitors spent a total of $21.2 billion on tourism-related activities in the United States, an increase of 14% compared to the same month last year, according to data from the National Travel and Tourism Office (NTTO). This increase reflects continued growth in the post-pandemic tourism sector, with foreign tourists spending an average of $697 million per day.

The breakdown of spending includes $11.7 billion for travel-related goods and services such as lodging, food, entertainment and transportation within the U.S. This accounted for 55% of the country's travel and tourism exports in June. U.S. airlines also benefited, generating $3.5 billion in passenger fare revenue, up 17% from a year earlier.

In addition, expenditures related to educational and health tourism, as well as those by temporary workers, reached $6.0 billion, up 9% compared to June 2023. These expenditures made up 28% of total U.S. travel and tourism exports in June.

Overall, during the first half of 2024, foreign visitors have contributed approximately $126.2 billion to the U.S. economy through tourism-related goods and services, a 17% increase compared to the same period in 2023.
