Michelin Introduces New Hotel Rating System in France

13-04-24

Michelin recently announced its latest accolade in the hotel industry: the Key ranking system. Similar to its renowned restaurant star system, the Key ratings range from one for "special" hotels, two for "exceptional" ones, to three for "extraordinary" establishments. On Monday, Michelin awarded 24 French hotels with its highest, Three Keys rating.

The list of awarded establishments includes prestigious palace hotels such as the Four Seasons George V and a variety of unique accommodations ranging from rural retreats like Lafauri-Peyraguey to quirky urban boutiques like Hôtel Le Ballu. In total, 38 hotels received Two Keys, and 127 were awarded One Key. For a complete list of the ratings, visit Michelin’s official website.

Michelin’s approach aims to evaluate hotels comprehensively, emphasizing aspects such as dining, design, service, local flavor, and distinctiveness to enhance guest experiences. This system is set to roll out globally, with upcoming announcements for the top U.S. luxury hotels on April 24, followed by Spain, Italy, and later Japan and Korea.

Industry Perspective: The luxury hotel sector is keenly observing Michelin's new system, anticipating its influence on business and recognition standards. Valeriano Antonioli, CEO of the Lungarno Collection, commented on the potential benefits of a globally recognized rating system, especially for smaller, lesser-known brands. He noted the challenge of comparing hotels internationally and regionally due to varying standards and expressed hope that Michelin's framework could bring much-needed clarity.

As the industry anticipates how Michelin’s ratings will reshape global hotel standards, the guide positions itself as a formidable competitor to existing rating systems like the Forbes Travel Guide.
