Mexico acknowledges that the country's main airport "is saturated"

"Mexico City International Airport is saturated". Mexico's president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, has acknowledged that the facility has more air operations than recommended to ensure safety. He does so nine years too late, as in 2014 the aerodrome already exceeded its safety limit capacity.

Due to this saturation, López Obrador has already announced that as of 29 October the number of operations at Mexico City International Airport (AICM) will be reduced. In this regard, the Federal Civil Aviation Agency (AFAC) has determined that in order to ensure safety, the number of operations should be reduced from 52 to 43 per hour, according to information from Publimetro.

Already in May last year, there were several incidents at Mexico City International Airport caused by the saturation of the facilities. Specifically, two planes avoided collisions with other aircraft when landing. This led to the dismissal of the director of Mexican Airspace Navigation Services, Victor Hernandez.
