New York City unveils upcoming activities, openings and renovations

New York City does not stand still. In the remainder of 2023, and anticipating 2024, the offer of activities and openings multiplies in the five boroughs and invites all visitors to enjoy it to the fullest. The following is a selection of new developments, ranging from museums, sporting events and exhibitions to investments in infrastructure and hotels.

Expansions and openings of museums and cultural venues

The first visitor center dedicated to LGBTQ+ history will open in New York City in 2024. The Stonewall National Monument Visitor Center will honor and explore the history of the 1969 Stonewall Uprising and will be located in a storefront in Greenwich Village, adjacent to the historic Stonewall Inn.

The iconic theater is expanding for the first time with the "Victoria Theater Redevelopment Project" that will introduce two new stages, creating an arts campus in Harlem.

The New York City Ballet celebrates its 75ᵒ anniversary this year. The first performance took place on October 11, 1948 on West 55th Street at the City Center for Music and Drama, and consisted of three ballets, Concerto Barocco, Orpheus and Symphony in C, choreographed by co-founder George Balanchine. The anniversary season will continue through the summer of 2024 with more than 60 ballets and 25 weeks of performances.

Following a physical and programmatic expansion, the Armstrong Corona Campus, formerly known as the Louis Armstrong House, has debuted a new cultural center with an interactive exhibit, archival collections, a 68-seat jazz club and a store, all dedicated to celebrating and preserving the life and legacy of legendary jazz musician Louis Armstrong.

The Museum of the City of New York celebrates its 100th anniversary this year. The museum has amassed a collection of more than 750,000 objects including photographs, prints, costumes, paintings and more to celebrate, document and interpret the city's past, present and future works.

Located just south of Yankee Stadium, in 2024 this space will pay homage to the rich culture and history of the South Bronx as the birthplace of hip-hop.

The American LGBTQ+ Museum, scheduled to open in 2026, will be New York's first museum dedicated to showcasing global, national and local LGBTQ+ history and culture.

Annual celebrations and major events

The international sailing competition will return to the city on June 22-23, 2024 as part of its global circuit of 12 regattas on four continents.

New York's annual Pride Parade is one of the largest in the world and attracts tens of thousands of participants and millions of spectators annually. It will take place on June 30, 2024 with celebrations in all five boroughs, details of which will be announced soon.

In 2026, the United States will celebrate 250 years since its founding. New York will celebrate in grand style as the nation's first capital, the birthplace of the U.S. government and the place where the Bill of Rights was written.

FIFA has announced that New York/New Jersey will be the host cities for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Additional details, including which games will be held in the area, will be shared as they are announced.

The city will celebrate its 400th anniversary throughout 2024. Discovered in 1624, New York City - then known as New Amsterdam - has continued to evolve into a city known for its culturally rich and diverse population.

After being decorated with more than 50,000 multi-colored, energy-efficient LED lights and topped with a Swarovski star, the tree will be illuminated during the live broadcast of "Christmas at Rockefeller Center" on Wednesday, November 29. The tree will be on display until Jan. 13 at 10 p.m.

Hospitality

Launched in 2022, NYC Hotel Week is NYC Tourism + Convention's newest exclusive program. Its next edition will run from January 3 to February 4, 2024, and will offer a 24% discount off the standard room rate at hundreds of the city's best hotels in all five boroughs during the winter season.

Renaissance Hotels debuted a new hotel in the heart of Harlem at the Victoria Theatre development, which contains the 211-room tower, a residential tower and a new expansion of the Apollo Theatre.

Located in the heart of the city, this new 661-room hotel boasts unparalleled views and is just steps away from all of New York's quintessential attractions, including Central Park, Rockefeller Center, Radio City and more. The hotel also features an outdoor terrace overlooking the city and a lobby bar and lounge.

The Fifth Avenue Hotel combines a historic 1907 Renaissance Revival-style building known as The Mansion with a modern 24-story glass tower. Located in Manhattan's Nomad neighborhood at 250 Fifth Avenue, this property offers 153 guest rooms and suites designed by Martin Brudnizki Design Studio.

Exhibits

The Brooklyn Museum's newest exhibition, on view through February 4, 2024, offers a rare glimpse into the world of one of the most influential filmmakers and directors, Spike Lee. The immersive installation includes objects drawn from the Brooklyn-raised director's personal collection, allowing visitors to discover the sources of inspiration that have shaped his creative output over the decades.

Running for Civil Rights will explore the origins of the New York City Marathon through the activism and innovation of the New York Road Runners and New York Pioneer Club, two running organizations that changed long-distance running in the United States. The exhibitions, open through February 25, 2024, examine the leadership and legacy of two African-American runners, Ted Corbitt (1919-2007) and Joseph Yancey (1910-1991), and their pivotal role in democratizing long-distance running in the United States.

On November 13, the American Museum of Natural History will debut a special exhibition that reveals new science about ancient and modern elephants, such as mammoths and mastodons, highlighting their extraordinary minds and senses. The exhibit will also delve into how the creatures "hear" with their feet and use the 40,000 muscles in their trunks, among other details.

Picasso in Fontainebleau examines three months of the legendary artist's career, when Picasso created a surprisingly varied body of work between July and September 1921 in the town of Fontainebleau, France. The exhibition also sees the return of four monumental works on canvas, both versions of Picasso's Three Musicians and Three Women in Spring, and additional works he created in Fontainebleau. Available through February 17, 2024.

Transportation investments

This vessel, the first of its kind, will usher in a new era of cleaner, more efficient shipping. It will operate as part of the New York Water Taxi, which will travel the Hudson River between Brooklyn and Manhattan with a capacity of up to 147 passengers per trip and 28 bicycles.

LGA is undergoing an $8 billion transformation to become a single, structurally unified main terminal with improved transportation access and first-class passenger amenities. This is the first complete reconstruction of a U.S. airport in more than 25 years. All remaining construction is scheduled for completion in 2024. Most recently, LaGuardia's Terminal B was named the best new airport terminal in the world, according to a global customer survey conducted by the international transportation ratings organization Skytrax.

On January 12, Newark Liberty International Airport opened the $2.7 billion upgraded Terminal A, which offers 33 new gates serving Air Canada, American Airlines, JetBlue and United Airlines customers, connected directly to a multi-level parking garage. EWR is also working on a new 4-kilometer elevated train system to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and ease traffic congestion.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, in partnership with American Airlines and Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield Airports, is launching a $125 million commercial redevelopment initiative for Terminal 8 at JFK Airport. This project will introduce more than 60 new shopping and dining options, emphasizing local and diverse businesses, following a $400 million terminal expansion.
