Hurricane Otis snatches Mexico's Tianguis Turistico de Mexico March 2024 from Acapulco

05-11-23

Acapulco will be left without the celebration of the next edition of the Tianguis Turístico de México 2024. This has been agreed by Miguel Torruco, Secretary of Tourism of the Government of Mexico, and Evelyn Salgado, Governor of Guerrero, the state where the tourist enclave is located. The decision was a consequence of the estimated time needed for the recovery of the destination after the passage of Hurricane Otis.

Now, the Ministry of Tourism of the Government of Mexico will have to establish the bases to choose the new venue for the tourist event to be held between March 11 and 15, 2024. To do so, it will convene an extraordinary meeting of the Selection Committee of the Tianguis Turístico de México, as Torruco himself has informed.

For her part, the governor of Guerrero has assured that the three levels of government (federal, state and local) are carrying out the necessary work for the prompt recovery of the port of Acapulco and that "shortly" the city will be ready to once again host the Tianguis Turístico, precisely the place where the most important event for the Mexican tourism industry was born.

It is worth remembering that since its birth in 1976, the Tianguis Turístico has been held in Acapulco. However, in 2011, the then Secretary of Tourism of the Mexican Government, Gloria Guevara, wanted to take the event out of Acapulco and make it itinerant. However, the Mexican population did not accept that decision, so starting in 2015 an intermediate decision was made: the Tianguis would become an itinerant event, but every two years it would return to Acapulco.
