CLIA joins Rountable on Sutainable Biomaterials on its path to sustainability at sea

Cruise Lines International Association has joined Rountable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB), taking a further step in its commitment to lead the way towards a zero carbon industry by 2050.

By becoming a member of RSB, CLIA - along with more than a hundred other organisations - will encourage the continued development of the RSB Principles & Criteria, the world's most trusted approach to advancing a just and sustainable transition to zero net emissions.

In this process, CLIA member lines are exploring many innovative solutions, including the use of sustainable marine fuels: 75% of the fleet could already use them if they were available at scale. CLIA's membership of the RSB network will focus on maximising access to its new Sustainable Marine Fuel Platform.

As part of this platform, CLIA will work with other leading organisations within the maritime industry to address issues related to sustainability in marine fuels, the development of approaches to engage legislators and the promotion of consistent and robust sustainability practices.

CLIA's director general for Europe, Marie-Caroline Laurent, says: "The development of sustainable marine fuels will be key to achieving the decarbonisation of shipping; we want to share our expertise to drive innovations and new technologies that will help us achieve our climate goals".

RSB's director of outreach and engagement, Hannah Walker, said: "We welcome CLIA to our collaborative network; we look forward to working together to support the cruise industry in achieving its goal of being zero neutral. "Collaboration within and across sectors is one of the key approaches to building the circular bioeconomy," she concludes.
