Bitcoin and surfing, El Salvador's bets to boost tourism

26-07-23

Tourists are flocking to El Salvador and doing so in record numbers, according to the Central American country's tourism minister.

The announcement comes as the nation steps up its PR campaign to show the world that it is no longer a small backwater plagued by violent street gangs, but a haven for Bitcoin and surfing.

El Salvador made headlines in 2021 when it became the first country in the world to legalise Bitcoin. Its president has jumped on the Bitcoin bandwagon and businesses now have to accept the cryptocurrency by law.

There is no doubt that President Bukele has turned the country's situation around with a historic offensive against El Salvador's most notorious criminal groups. At the same time, he hopes to transform the country into a technology hub.

But in terms of tourism, as a natural destination, El Salvador has long been considered one of the best destinations for surfing, and for several reasons.

It is important to keep in mind that the conditions and reputation of a surf destination can change over time, but El Salvador has conditions that make it an ideal place for surfers.

Consistent waves: El Salvador is blessed with a coastline that receives consistent waves all year round. Its beaches offer a combination of quality waves for surfers of all levels, from beginners to experts. Surfing here is an exciting and rewarding experience due to the predictable conditions.

World-class beaches and surf spots: The country has a wealth of world-renowned beaches and surf spots. Some of the most popular surfing beaches in El Salvador include El Tunco, El Zonte, La Libertad and Punta Roca. These beaches offer a variety of challenging and exciting waves for surfing enthusiasts.

Climate and temperature: El Salvador enjoys a warm, tropical climate all year round, making it an ideal destination for surfers who want to enjoy the water without worrying about the cold. The average water temperature is pleasant, making it possible to surf without the need for wetsuits at most times of the year.

Tourism infrastructure: Over the years, El Salvador has developed an adequate tourism infrastructure to meet the needs of travellers, including surfers. There is a wide range of accommodation options, from budget hostels to luxury resorts, and a selection of restaurants and off-water activities.

Relaxed and welcoming atmosphere: El Salvador's friendly and relaxed atmosphere has been attractive to many travellers and surfers. The local population is warm and welcoming, making visitors feel welcome and safe while enjoying the country's waves and culture.

Growing surf scene: Over the years, El Salvador's surf scene has been growing and gaining recognition in the international surfing community. It has hosted a number of surfing events and championships, which has enhanced its reputation as a destination for surfing enthusiasts.

Seen in this light, President Bukele's proposal does not seem far-fetched: given the competition in Central America with other destinations that offer greater biodiversity, the small nation's commitment to surfing as its main tourism offering fits like a glove.
