17-12-23
The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) today inaugurated a Latin American headquarters in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), adding three regional offices outside the central office in Madrid.
At the controversial 25th General Assembly of the UNWTO held last October in Uzbekistan, the installation of a regional representation of the UNWTO was approved. In addition to the Organization's headquarters in Madrid (Spain), the entity has a regional office located in Saudi Arabia.
The new office aims to be a reference point for actions and policies that can boost tourism throughout the region, promoting the economic and social development of the countries it serves.
The inauguration of the unit was attended, among others, by UNWTO Secretary-General, Zurab Pololikashvili; Brazil's Minister of Tourism, Celso Sabino; Paraguay's Minister of Tourism, Angie Duarte; Uruguay's Deputy Minister of Tourism, Remo Monzeglio; and Chile's Undersecretary of Tourism, Verónica Pilar Pardo Lagos, as well as parliamentarians and investors.
The new UNWTO headquarters, located in downtown Rio de Janeiro, has 24 rooms with workstations for the team of consultants, meeting rooms and also private rooms for the director of the Brazil office and the representative of the World Trade Organization WTO in the country.
Among the actions planned to take place in this office are the continuation of WTO activities at the regional level, the development of actions related to the promotion of "responsible, sustainable and universally accessible" tourism, as well as the promotion of the integration of tourism into the global agenda.
