Oneworld Alliance joins IATA's CO2 Connect

IATA launched CO2 Connect in June 2022, with the aim of using member airline data, such as fuel consumption, hold load and occupancy factors, to provide high-quality estimates of CO2 emissions per passenger flight.

Combined with data from IATA and the open data marketplace, CO2 Connect calculates CO2 emissions from 74 aircraft types, representing approximately 98% of the global operational passenger fleet, and examines traffic data from 881 air operators representing around 93% of global air travel.

The International Air Transport Association and the oneworld alliance have joined forces to work together in the field of CO2 emissions calculations. Oneworld members include Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Finnair, Iberia, Japan Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Qatar Airways, Qantas, Royal Air Maroc, Royal Jordanian and SriLankan Airlines.

Grace Cheung, Chair of oneworld's Environment and Sustainability Council and Head of Sustainability and Corporate Responsibility for the Cathay Pacific Group, said, "oneworld is proud to be the first global airline alliance to support IATA's work to provide customers with high quality estimates of the CO2 emissions of their flights. Our collaboration with IATA on CO2 Connect will in turn help key players across the aviation industry, such as airlines, aircraft manufacturers and travel management companies, among others, to make better and more informed decisions for travelers and improve ESG reporting."

In a recent survey, 90% of respondents said travelers have a responsibility to know the carbon emissions of their flight, but only two in five actually do so. And while 84% of respondents acknowledge that it is easy to find tools to accurately calculate their carbon emissions, the vast majority (90%) expect airlines or travel agents to provide them with this information, indicating a reliance on the industry to provide passengers with advance information on the carbon impact of their flights.
