Germany to increase tax on airline tickets to raise 1.58 billion annually

22-12-23

Germany's Federal Government has announced its budget plans for 2024, which include an increase in airline ticket tax that may make travel even more expensive.

As reported by Spiegel, the executive aims to bring in an additional €580 million annually, which will add to the nearly €1 billion it had already been generating.

The tax, introduced in 2011, affects all passengers departing from German airports and with charges between €12.73 and €58.06 per ticket, varying according to the distance of the journey. It is up to the airlines to pay this amount, deciding whether to pass it on in the ticket price or to assume the charge.

This increase could weigh down the travel intentions of German tourists, of great importance for Spain as it is the second largest issuing market, only behind the United Kingdom and competing with France.
