The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) urged industry representatives to strongly promote the participation of young people, in order to boost the growth of the sector with more talent and innovation.

Travel & Tourism is one of the largest sectors in the world, with around 80% of all businesses being small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

It is also one of the most diverse sectors, employing people from all socio-economic backgrounds, regardless of age, gender or ethnicity. More than 50% of its jobs are held by women and 30% by young people.

On the occasion of International Youth Day, Julia Simpson, President and CEO of WTTC, said: "The Travel & Tourism sector is a driver of socio-economic development and job creation on a global scale. However, actions must be strengthened to encourage greater participation of young people who, with their talent and knowledge of the increasingly dynamic and modern world, add to the sector and its development".

The sector, which currently accounts for 9.2% of global GDP and supports one in 11 jobs worldwide, is experiencing remarkable growth, outpacing the global economy.

Julia Simpson also stressed that young people are a growing social group and undoubtedly represent a key player on the road to a more connected, diverse and sustainable sector.

In this way, WTTC will continue to work on actions in favour of the empowerment of women, youth and other social groups in the global tourism activity.
